When Will Meghan Markle Become a British Citizen?

Duchess Meghan Markle is still trying to find her footing as a senior member of the British Royal Family.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t been a seamless transition for her. The former actress is known for her outspokenness and activism. However, the royal family is known for its rules and traditions which have made it difficult for Markle to navigate.

Also, because she’s a woman of color and an American — the British public and press have not made Markle’s move to the royal family easy. She has been bullied and harassed in the press with tabloids making up malicious lies about her.

In fact, though Markle was slated to become a British citizen shortly after she married Prince Harry in May 2018 — that hasn’t happened yet.

Meghan Markle won’t become a British citizen for several years

Even for a member of the British Royal Family — Markle is being treated like everyone else who applies for citizenship. Though she applied for British Citizen when she and Prince Harry got engaged in November 2017 — things haven’t moved quickly for her at all. In fact, Prince Harry’s communications secretary, Jason Knauf said at the time, “[Meghan] will be compliant with immigration requirements at all times. I can also say she intends to become a U.K. citizen and will go through the process of that, which some of you may know takes a number of years.”

“Meghan is not yet a British citizen,” an insider told Daily Mail. “It might seem extraordinary, given that she’s been married to the Queen’s grandson for 18 months, but she accepts that it’s a slow process.”

Meghan Markle has to pass several tests to become a British citizen

They just don’t hand out citizenship in the United Kingdom for sport. Like everyone else — the Duchess of Sussex will have to take an extensive test that includes questions on British values, history, traditions, and everyday life. She will also have to prove that she knows English and has good character.

Now that she’s two years into the application process we expect the duchess to have her hands on a British passport soon. However, Markle might also want to hold on to her U.S. citizenship because her transition into the British family has been so rocky. An insider told The Sun, “There’s an acceptance that things haven’t worked out with the Sussexes full-time in Windsor so they could have a second base in America.”

Meghan Markle is still paying taxes in the U.S.

Since Markle is still an American citizen — it’s causing several issues with her and Prince Harry’s taxes. In addition to the taxes that Markle must pay on any income that she’s earned, the U.S. Department of Revenue could also request taxes from Prince Harry’s income and inheritances.

The prince is worth quite a great deal of money and we’re sure that he has no desire to have the IRS digging around his personal affairs. Until Markle does become a citizen, the Sussexes have hired U.S. tax experts to try and untangle some of the red tape.
