Every baby milestone is exciting — aside from taking those first steps, one of the biggest thrills is introducing a baby to their first solid foods. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby, Archie, has reportedly ventured into solid food territory and it’s no doubt an exciting time for the Sussexes.
The latest baby Archie update is a big one
Baby Archie hasn’t been seen since the Sussexes’ trip to South Africa in late September, but there have been a number of updates about Prince Harry and Markle’s son since then.
The latest milestone young Archie is set to embark upon is solid food — an exciting time for any family, as they get to see what becomes a favorite and what foods end up spit out or tossed to the floor.
Archie is now just over six months old, which is the time that babies are typically first introduced to solid foods.
Royal commentator Omid Scobie gave the latest Archie update during an appearance on Yahoo UK’s The Royal Story podcast, noting, “Meghan says that Archie’s currently being weaned at the moment” and is “at some point moving on to solids.”
Scobie asked former royal chef Carolyn Robb what a royal baby would eat and she noted: “Organic, seasonal and just very simple,” adding, “Everything is made fresh. No pouches. There’s so much pre-made baby food available but I’m sure they would like doing everything themselves.”
When can babies eat solid food?
The Parents website reports that, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you can “start your child on solids between 4 and 6 months,” but notes it “really depends on your baby and when he’s ready.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics provides this list of signs that a child is ready for baby food:
The baby sits upright and holds up his/her head
The baby is “curious, looking at everything around her — especially what you’re eating”
The baby has lost the tongue thrust reflex that automatically pushes food out of his or her mouth
The baby is still hungry after getting a full day’s portion of milk (eight to 10 breastfeedings or about 32 ounces of formula)
The Parents site further notes that babies can begin with an introduction to single-grain cereals between 4 to 6 months, followed by pureed vegetables, fruits, and meats at age 4 to 8 months, and single-ingredient finger foods between ages 6 to 8 months. They can try chopped, ground, or mashed foods at 9 to 12 months.
Baby Archie’s other milestones
Of course, royal fans have heard about Archie’s other milestones, from holding his head up, to chatting, crawling, and getting his first teeth.
During Prince Harry and Markle’s visit to the Broom Farm Community Center, where they surprised military families, Markle spoke with a child about Archie’s little teeth, saying, “Archie just got two teeth. Two tiny ones, right there.”
A mom who was at the gathering, Amy Thompson, whose husband Brad is in the Welsh Guards, told BBC News how she chatted with Markle. She shared: “My daughter Aeris is the same age as Archie and we talked about weaning and the children beginning to crawl — she’s just a normal mum and it was like talking to a friend.”
