Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are taking a much-needed break from the spotlight with an extended break from their royal duties. Some believe that they’re missing out on a giant opportunity to heal some of the tension in the royal family, however. Have they made the right choice to miss the annual royal Christmas gathering?
Prince Harry and Markle are taking a break
Most royal fans would agree that Prince Harry and Markle have had a pretty challenging year with the constant public and media scrutiny. Their decision to take a six-week break and spend the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, is beneficial for them to recharge and step away from the unforgiving headlines.
It was initially believed that the couple would return in time to spend Christmas with Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family, but Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Sussexes will not be on hand for the annual gathering.
‘As brothers you have good days, you have bad days’
Did they make the right decision to skip Christmas with the royal family?
While many think the Sussexes should take advantage of the opportunity for some time away from being under the microscope, others think it’s a missed opportunity to heal some of the tension they have with Prince William, Kate Middleton, and the queen.
During interviews for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Markle was candid about struggling with life in the spotlight, while Prince Harry admitted that the rumors that he and Prince William are feuding are true.
Markle shared how all of the scrutiny has become overwhelming, admitting: “It’s not enough to just survive something, that’s not the point of life. You have got to thrive.”
According to a report from People, a source shared that “no one” in the royal family is “checking in” with Prince Harry and Markle. The insider told People that there haven’t been any changes for the Sussexes, as the insider shared: “Nothing has changed. They don’t speak, no one is checking in, no one is texting.”
This is in contrast to previous reports that, following Prince Harry and Markle’s emotional interviews, Prince William and Kate Middleton have reached out to make sure the couple are doing okay.
“It shows there is a deep rift”
Could Prince Harry and Markle improve things with the royal family if they attend Christmas at Sandringham? Phil Dampier, author of Royally Suited: Harry and Meghan, told MailOnline: “It’s very hard to see this as anything other than a snub to the Queen and the rest of the royal family. It shows there is a deep rift.”
He added: “If Harry and Meghan wanted to heal the divisions they should have turned up at Sandringham. It’s a great shame but there seems to be a problem which is getting worse, not better”
Dampier shared this theory about the Sussexes’ holiday plans: “I don’t buy it’s the turn of Meghan to spend Christmas with her family. She’s only close to her mother and they will see plenty of her during their six-week break. I’m sure that the Queen would be happy to invite Doria to Sandringham to join them.”
