The American Music Awards aired on Nov. 24. BTS was nominated for three awards: Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock, Favorite Social Artist, and Tour of the Year. At the AMAs, the group won in all three categories. In their acceptance speech for Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock, BTS thanked ARMY for helping turn their dreams into a reality.
BTS became the first non-English act to win the award for Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock
The Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock award was created in 1974. This year’s AMAs marked BTS’s first time being nominated for the award. In 2018, BTS was nominated for and won Favorite Social Artist. At the 2019 AMAs, BTS made history as the first non-English act to win the award for Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock.
“THE FIRST NON-ENGLISH ACT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF AMA CONGRATS @BTS_twt,” wrote a Twitter user.
“bts is the first non-english act in #AMAs history to be nominated and win the top duo/group award, a korean group is the best group in america, we love to see it #AmericasBestGroupBTS,” a fan tweeted.
Earlier this year, BTS won the Top Duo/Group award at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards. They were also named Variety’s 2019 Group of the Year. Despite some refusing to recognize BTS’s impact, these honors show a Korean group is one of the biggest music acts in the U.S.
BTS thanked ARMY in their AMAs acceptance speech
BTS was not able to attend the AMAs and accepted the award with a video message. Jungkook, Jin, and RM each spoke about their gratitude in BTS’s acceptance speech.
“BTS has been a group for six and a half years, and throughout those years we have had so many of our dreams somehow manifest into reality,” RM said. “And ARMY, you guys are the ones who made all of this possible, and we really couldn’t have done it without your love and support from all over the world.”
ARMY celebrated BTS’s win on social media
After BTS won the Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock award, BTS fans trended #AmericasBestGroupBTS on Twitter. With the hashtag, ARMY celebrated BTS’s historic AMAs milestone of becoming the first non-English music act to win the award. To BTS fans, the accomplishment showed BTS’s worldwide impact as they have been able to reach millions of fans around the world without caving to western music standards.
“The best group in America is a Non-english Korean group of singers, rappers, dancers, lyricists and producers that originated from a less known, smaller company and now is on top of the world. A true inspiration for us all. @BTS_twt#AmericasBestGroupBTS,” one fan tweeted.
