Thanksgiving weekend is finally upon us, and once all the food, family, and fun wear off, you’ll be ready to put that Disney Plus subscription to good use.
Disney promises that newer movies like Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, and Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker will eventually be on Disney Plus after their theatrical and home-video releases.
As well, Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO stated that Disney Plus will eventually stream all films and content produced by Disney, with the exception of their mature movies distributed through Fox (owned by Disney), which will be sent on to Hulu.
In the meantime, here are 5 great movies on Disney Plus to savor after your feasting this Thanksgiving weekend.
‘While You Were Sleeping’ on Disney Plus
We have to start with this 1995 rom-com classic starring Sandra Bullock. It’s considered a Christmas movie because it’s set during the holidays but that’s about it – no songs or reindeer. What it does have is a winding comedic-romantic thread that is hilarious to try to keep up with. A fun movie for adults and kids. With scene-stealer Peter Boyle from Everybody Loves Raymond.
‘Frozen’ on Disney Plus
Of course, Academy Award-winning Frozen made the list! With its sequel in theaters, now you can catch up on what happened in the first movie on Disney Plus this weekend.
If you don’t remember the plot from the first 50 times you’ve seen it, it’s the story of a princess and her friends (an iceman, his reindeer, and an adorable little snowman) determined to find her sister, queen of their country, who has physically and emotionally alienated herself after accidentally leaving her country in an endless winter.
‘Free Solo’ on Disney Plus
Another Academy Award-winning film, Free Solo is not for the faint of heart. As Outside Online puts it, it’s more a classic horror film than anything else.
This film follows mountain climber Alex Honnold as he fulfills his dream of climbing the 3,000 foot El Capitan mountain in Yosemite National Park, without a rope or support of any kind. Even though you know how it ends, this documentary is a nail biter.
One of the film’s cinematographers, Mikey Schaefer, said, “There were many times while shooting the actual free solo that I had a hard time watching. I think a lot of that was due to the fact that I know the route… In a way, it would be a lot easier if I didn’t know.”
‘Noelle’ on Disney Plus
Thanksgiving weekend also means the start of the Christmas season! Noelle is the perfect pick to kick off your Christmas movie viewing for the holidays. Starring Anna Kendrick, the movie looks at a North Pole where the job of Santa is handed down through the generations. It’s sweet, full of Christmas spirit, and fun.
‘Lady and the Tramp’ on Disney Plus
This live-action reboot of the 1955 animated classic follows a well-off, domesticated American cocker spaniel named Lady and her friend, a streetwise, stray schnauzer called Tramp in their adventures. Along the way, they fall in love.
Have an entertaining weekend with your family, friends, and Disney Plus!
